Desire: To construct a ascetically pleasing, environmentally sustainable exterior wall that can last the elements. TASK:Construct a 1:2 model incorporating a wall + window + roof/ eave using actual material elements. After construction test integrity with a hose, simulated rainfall for 5 minute period. Record the entire process. • Research • Sketches • Construction • Testing
After removing the rear formwork we were able to see the mess we made in our first experience with mortar. These photos were taken after the water test; you can see some of the mortar was washed away from the front of the wall. This is because the mortar had not dried completely. Disregarding this the rear of the wall was no wetter then it had been before the test and no water had actually come through around the window or between the logs. In this respect the wall was relatively watertight and could have been potentially waterproof if the mortar had set.
